~ 1TMT1 + 1TMT2 ….guys
who wearing blue uniform are naval cadets, those wearing baju kurung or formal
attire are civilians ~
Last visit to Lumut was last year, already past 1 year. As I
studying Degree in Technology Maritime now, then of course for this few years,
my life can’t run away from maritime industry. This semester, I’m taking
subject of Maritime Communication, so we got one class visit on 2 April 2012 to
Stesen Komunikasi Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia Lumut (SKTLDM Lumut), to see how
SKTLDM Lumut functions. Actually SKTLDM is a place prohibited to outsiders, but
we are UPNM’s students and our lecturers apply to let us visit. Maybe by
reading, we didn’t absorb all the knowledge, but with seeing, for sure it can
keep our memory stronger and deeper. We had a short briefing about SKTLDM Lumut
and then visited to every department in there. Feels like “Oh, not bad la
Malaysia”. Of course as I mentioned, it is prohibited place, so I also cannot
talk more about SKTLDM Lumut. But just can say, this visit really helped me a
lot. It was proved in my test. My test was on the next day of Lumut visit.
Actually I didn’t read so much about the theory and didn’t remember the
important points, but I’m answering questions according to what we learned
yesterday. Result coming out with better result than I expected. Erm…that’s why
experience always win than become a bookworm.

Well, let’s move to next destination, Pekan Lumut, is time
to buy satay ikan. Last year, we went Lumut with 35people only, but this year
we went together with new students, so total up are 68 people, 20 naval cadets
and 48 civilians. Journey from KL to Lumut need around 4 hours, takkan want to
straight go back to KL after visit, right? So, we “shopping” there, I planned
to buy some back to hometown. After surveyed the prices there, wa, I bought
around RM30 leh, only for junk food, oh no. Looking everybody holding 3 or 4
plastic bags, felt so funny, seems like went for a long vacation, but just went
to Lumut in reality, haha.
~ See, so many bags from them ~
Maritime studies really very wide extent to explore. Now,
our faculty is on the way to make civilian students more valuable in this
extent and can get jobs easily. For civilian students, we still can choose
which department we wish to work in our future, for those naval cadets, they
will upgrade as navy officer and serve in Royal Malaysia Navy (RMN) after
commission. Those who own “Mariners Card” will have better chance in maritime
world and can go for internationally. The course included basic safety
training, get the license, tanker fertilization course and many more. The only
department that provide mariners course is Marine Department Malaysia. Once you
passed all the courses and tests, then will get the mariners card. Commonly,
mariner course is taken by who want to go sailing or work on merchant ship. When
lecturer ask who wish to get this course, everyone put on their hand, not only
guys but ladies as well. This course very attracted to me and others. Actually,
go sailing very dangerous and who knows what will happen on the ship. Not
everyone can take this course, it costs quite expensive to get the license and
the most important thing is you need to pass the medical check-up 1st.
If medical check-up fail, you are OUT!!! Our lecturer not encourage ladies to
take this course, so no need to think la har.. As I ask my parent, they also
not allowed, so… just wait those captain of merchant ships share their experience
and life on the sea to us after they go for sail la…. Is it every day looking
at dolphins jump over here and there? Haha. If you are interested in mariners,
you search on the rules.
But for girls, we can go for navigation centre to work, such
as Air Control Room at KLIA. 2nd year students just visited to Air
Control Room KLIA, and our lecturer told us they are welcome us to work at
there. At least feels that ladies work at base more safety la. Can I put my
hope on this? Hoho.

Our faculty really helped us a lot. Subjects of us about Maritime
Communication, Nautical Science, Nautical Law, Basic Electric, Marin Science and
many more. And so, in future, maybe next
year or next next year, will got another degree courses open in UPNM, such as
Degree in Hydrography, Degree in Geography and many more la. Like what I’m
taking now is Degree in Technology Maritime, is the course that only one in
Malaysia. Still got other universities provide courses about Maritime, as
example:
1. Degree in Science Oceanography
2. Degree in Marine Biology
3. Degree in Technology Maritime
4. Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport
5. Degree in Maritime Management
Their courses are quite specific and different from us. Degree
in Technology Maritime in UPNM consists of subjects of 5 courses from UMT. So, we
are covered wider extent. As UMT is more well-known because they already got many
years in history. UMT located in Terengganu, so their students always got outing
and do research at sea. UPNM is lack of this “facility”.
1. Degree in Aquaculture
2. Degree in Marine Science
3. Degree in Fisheries Science
UMS is expert in this extent too, but their research more about
in the sea. Different with us, ours are more at the sea. UMS from Borneo Marine
Research Unit upgraded become Borneo Marine Research Institute in year 2000. Quite
popular also.
Besides, got many maritime academy in Malaysia too and government
institution like ALAM. If you ask me which industry will got brighter future, I
will tell you, maritime is very good to explore. Malaysia need this kind of professionals.
Alright, just my introduction to you all. Thanks. And hope everyone will get bright
future.
